Review of The Technical Analysis Course By Thomas Meyers

Reviewed by Ed Dobson, President, Traders Press, Inc.

The Technical Analysis CourseThe Technical Analysis CourseThe Technical Analysis Course is a structured series of 19 lessons, each of which covers a major topic in detail. It will prove to be of value to those new to technical analysis, especially those who possess technical analysis software to aid in their timing and selection decisions. Each lesson concludes with a true-false quiz to test the reader’s knowledge of the topic covered.

Several of the lessons are concerned primarily with chart construction and interpretation and deal with relevant concepts, such as gaps, consolidations and reversal patterns and also deal with alternate charting methods, such as point and figure and candlesticks.

The section titled “Key Analytical Tools” covers trend lines and channels, support and resistance, moving averages, relative strength analysis and volume / open interest analysis. “Advanced Analysis” covers oscillators, the relative strength index and stochastics. “Overall Market Analysis” covers Dow Theory and a host of technical market indicators including those dealing with sentiment, monetary factors, volume, breadth and new highs / lows.

Lessons 18 and 19 (collectively, “Putting It All Together”) provide a structured, overall approach to technical analysis, which has truly developed over the years into an increasingly broad subject area. Throughout the book, one finds brief, well written “Technical Analysis Tips”, which provide considerable insight for the student of technical analysis. Illustrations are copious and helpful to understanding the principles presented and discussed.

I feel that there are a number of other books that offer somewhat more in-depth coverage of the topics in this book. Examples include Murphy’s Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets, Elder’s Trading for a Living, Pring’s Technical Analysis Explained and others. However, for new students who want to take things slowly and learn to walk before picking up speed with more advanced texts, this is an ideal starting point.
